The Future is Bright for Solar Lights

Many of us think "solar lights" and picture the older style lamps that people have in their front yard with wires leading to a solar panel that sticks out like a sore thumb. Actually, solar lighting technology has come a long way since the fist generation solar landscape lights. The solar cells (called photovoltaic cells) have become smaller and more efficient, allowing them to gather more energy from less light. The incorporation of nickel cadmium batteries into the light fixtures allows them to store more energy to be used when they are needed. The introduction of LED bulbs allows them to put out more light while using less energy than other types of bulbs.

The recent advancements in solar technology have given manufacturers the freedom to design solar lights that vary more and more in design and application. Solar path lights now have the photovoltaic cells, lights and batteries built into one small fixture. Their compact nature makes it possible to simply push the fixture into the ground where ever you want it. For accenting different areas of your garden, solar accent lights are the way to go. They come in many gorgeous designs that will match any decor and are just as easy to install as path lights. If you are looking for security lights, solar security lights are your best bet. Mounting them is fast and easy, and most of them come with a motion sensor that will turn the light on when they sense movement.

There are many benefits to using solar lighting. One benefit is that most solar lights have no wires. Being wireless makes installing them a snap. Just find a place to put them where they will collect sunlight. If you need lights where there is no sun, there are some that come with a separate panel that you can place in an area that has more light. Even with these remote solar fixtures, there is only one wire and the panel is small.

Another big plus is that solar lights require absolutely no maintenance. Once you have them mounted or placed where you need them, you can forget about them and let them do their job. The batteries usually last for the life of the fixtures, as do the bulbs. The fixtures themselves are so inexpensive, that it just makes sense to replace them at the first sign of problems. Solar lights are truly trouble free technology.

Perhaps the greatest advantage of using solar lights is that they are powered by the sun (renewable energy). Non-renewable energy is getting harder to come by and expensive. The earth has a limited amount of natural resources and we are running out of them. Solar lighting uses up no natural resources and is good for our environment. Since they cost no money to operate, they are great for your wallet as well.

There are so many reasons to switch to solar lighting that I could not possibly cover them all in one article. Future developments in solar technology ensure that solar lights will continue to increase in efficiency and decrease in price. We get to save money AND help save the Earth! Sweet!

Great Hub! I'm learning more about solar powered home appliances and I find this stuff just fascinating. Once we have some spare cash I think my spouse and I will attempt to change our home over to more eco-friendly power sources.
