Solar Garden Lights Basics

Using solar garden lights is a great way to illuminate your landscape without any digging or special wiring. These lights are affordable, safe, and contain a small circuit that will automatically turn the light on when night falls. The lights are completely powered by the sun, so they basically have no running cost and are environmentally friendly.

Over the past few decades, solar power has increased in popularity. The amount of sunlight that reaches the earth is more than enough to power the world many times over, but only recently has the technology been made cheap enough to be used in common households. They provide the exact same services as electrical lighting, although they are much cheaper to run. Some homes exclusively use solar lighting, while others use it as a backup power source.

The garden is one of the best places to install solar lighting because they need to be powered through direct sunlight. In order to charge the battery, the panels should have sun exposure for at least a few hours each day. Once night falls, the lights will then run off the batteries that have been charging throughout the day. If you are installing solar lighting on your property, make sure to place them in areas that are not blocked by trees or other objects. If the panel does not receive adequate sunlight, then the garden lights may not work properly.

Solar lights require low maintenance, making them perfect to be placed in the garden. Each light usually comes with a battery attached to it, which eliminates the need for wires. Wiring can be tricky job if you do not have electrical experience, but you do not have to worry about that with solar power because the entire lighting system is packed into one portable unit. This also makes the garden lights much easier to move around if you want to change their position later.

Solar garden lights are not usually very powerful; otherwise, the battery would run out too quickly. If you need to illuminate a large area of your garden, you should use multiple lights instead of one large light. They can also be used to line pools, decks, ponds, and walkways as long as there is a sufficient amount of sunlight.

In some ways, a solar light is like a miniature satellite. The store and generate their own power throughout the day and release it during the night, much like how a satellite stores solar energy while on the sunny side of the planet to use when it is on the dark side. A basic solar light is made up of six main components. These are a case, a solar panel, a battery, a circuit board, light bulb, and photo-resistor to detect darkness. Fancier lights may have more complicated systems, but all solar lighting devices use these main components to work. A solar battery charges every day so it usually has to be replaced after extended use, most manufactures recommend replacing them after 1 or 2 years.

Before purchasing solar garden lighting, assess your property to determine how many lights you will need. One disadvantage with solar power is that it can be initially expensive and its complex system will cost more during initial installation and maintenance. However, these expenses will usually pay for themselves in the long run. One of the most obvious problems is that this lighting system cannot be charged during the night, cloudy days also present a problem for charging the batteries. Some people avoid this problem by using a hybrid solar powered system that relies mainly on solar power, but if there is no sunlight, it will switch to normal electricity.

I hope that this article has answered any questions you might have had about whether or not you should go solar powered for your garden lights. Any other tips you might need to help you choose the right lights for you can be found at my main blog – The Solar Lights Site.

Solar garden lights are the way to go, I bought some when they first came out but the technology was poor and they barely flickered it seemed. I agree, these days they almost as good as low voltage lighting.
